Vietnam / 11 May 2022

Ho Chi Minh City, April 28, 2022: Gojek, Southeast Asia’s leading mobile on-demand services platform, today revealed new insights into changes in consumer food consumption habits and online food delivery (OFD) trends in the first quarter of 2022. The latest GoFood Vietnam data, from both Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and Hanoi (HN), reveals strong recovery and significant growth in how people consume and order food, recording double the number of GoFood orders in the first quarter of 2022 as compared to the first quarter of 2021 before the fourth COVID-19 outbreak.

1. The total number of transacting users on GoFood skyrocketed; more consumers ordering online for the first time

The number of users transacting on GoFood in the first quarter of 2022 nearly doubled, as compared to the same period in 2021, with Hanoi witnessing outsized growth of 220%. Among them, the number of new users soared in both cities, with the increase in Hanoi at more than 160% and HCMC at 80%. Gojek also saw a double year-on-year increase in GoFood orders in the first three months of 2022, among which the number of orders in Hanoi surged by more than four times.

Commenting on the data, Dung Le, Head of GoFood at Gojek Vietnam, said, “We have witnessed immense changes in the consumers' habits since the start of the pandemic, with more and more people turning to e-commerce activities, including online food delivery. This shift, together with the move towards cashless payment, is a continuing trend as we embrace the “new normal” era, indicating consumers' preference for convenience and priorities placed on health and safety.”

2. Consumers are transacting more frequently; more breakfast and fewer late-night snack orders

The frequency of ordering food online in the first three months of 2022 grew by over 20% as compared to the same period in 2021. Out of Gojek’s millions of users, an average Gojek consumer placed an OFD order every 5 days in the first three months of 2022.

The first quarter of 2022 also marked the highest uptick in breakfast orders, up 2.5 times on the same period in the previous year, followed by afternoon snacks, lunch and dinner, all of which were almost double. Late-night snacks did not grow as fast, but orders still increased by more than 30% year on year.

Among mealtimes, afternoon snack, lunch and dinner contributed the highest number of orders on GoFood, with each mealtime accounting for more or less a quarter of the total number of orders.

3. Snacks continued to top OFD lists; consumers are eating in groups more frequently.

Milk tea continues to lead the list of the most ordered drinks on GoFood in both HCMC and HN in 2022. Assorted flavored tea and bubble yogurt held the second and third place respectively in both cities. Notably, iced milk coffee entered the list of most ordered drinks on GoFood in both HCMC and Hanoi for the first time.

The majority of the top ordered food on GoFood were authentic Vietnamese cuisine, such as chicken rice, spring rolls, vermicelli and noodles, among others. Interestingly, deep-fried tofu with rice noodle, a very popular dish of the North, ranked #1 in the list of most ordered food in HCMC in the first three months of 2022, while the most ordered food in HN was Nha Trang grilled meat roll, followed by deep-fried tofu with rice noodle and Southern-style rice noodle with stir-fried beef.

Food combos and children's food were also in greater demand on GoFood, with orders for Food combos increasing by 3.5 times year on year in the first quarter of 2022, implying more people are eating together.

Dung Le said,“Understanding these food consumption trends is vitally important and will allow us to better respond to the changing needs of consumers and support all members of our ecosystem. In addition to our efforts to diversify the food choices on GoFood platform, we are continuously exploring new initiatives and solutions to effectively connect our merchant partners with consumers to meet their daily needs.”
